In 1965 nickel replaced silver in most U.S. coins, but back in 1942 silver actually replaced nickel in 5 cents pieces. Only six times in U.S. history has coinage been produced with two designs in one year during the same date. This rare occurance happened in 1857 with the five cent, in 1930, Buffalo nickel and Jefferson nickel. During the great silver boom 79-80 millions of these nickels were melted for their 35% silver content.
